federal reserve building on market street. you know more about the confrontation, the second one in two days. you have a fencing that's up near the trees where there were encampments. you also have the police line, to do not cross line. out in front of the federal reserve, you have federal police officers there just keeping an eye on the situation. they do not want occupy protesters coming back. they do not want that to happen even though protesters are vowing to reoccupy the space. i want to show you video from overnight. things got heated between police and protester. it started by five protesters who showed up at the site. they said they were going to take over. it was basically standing around for a little bit. there's a group of about 30 that joined the five. that's when things changed a

little bit. they started throwing bottles at the officers and police had to call in reinforcements. we have not been able to confirm if there were any arrests out of that confrontation a. protester said there was one person taken into custody. again, that has not been confirmed. we do know that the protesters had dispersed on their own once those extra officers arrived. we're following this closely because it follows the clearing of an etch campment on wednesday night and wednesday morning. that ended in 45 arrests. the situation as it stands now is quiet. we come back out here live to market street and right in front of the federal reserve,ing see the officers standing there. cones up. again, no protesters in sight here. the situation as it stands, you have the protesters who say we're determined to come back, and the police are saying we're not going to let you come back. that's why you have these

things up. claude dean wong. 22-year-old oliver -- faces several charges, including aggravated assault on a police officer. there was a community uproar after a plain clothed officer shot him during a foot chase. now, investigators say he was a gang member armed with a gun and headed to avenge the killing of a friend. >> the case is just one of a number of violent cases in the mission district. people marched through the streets calling for peace. they say they're not asking for much. they just want a safe neighborhood for their children. a teacher accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student is due in court. he's being held on the suspicion of lewd acts with a

child under 14. he taught sixth grade. he also coached volleyball and basketball at albany middle school since 2008. a police search continues for a morgan hill mother accused of using her young mother to shoplift and abandon a child. pam, police say a woman used her daughter to shoplift and left her when security approached. they say last week she and her 10-year-old daughter filled their cart with $150 worth of groceries and then keiland told the girl to wait by the exit when she pulled up in her car. store employees realized they didn't pay and they approached the girl. officers say that's when keiland drove off in her car. the grandmother ended up taking custody of her. two weeks prior to this, they

have surveillance video of keiland shoplifting from the safeway again. investigators have been unable to find her. police say she's known to drive a green ford explore with a wyoming license plate of 411118. morgan hill says they would like your help. if you've seen her, please give them a call. reporting live, ktvu news. there's reports this morning connecting al-qaeda to the american consulate in libya. and they're being criticized for how they protect diplomats. you will hear what intelligence officials are revealing now. well, nobel peace prize winner from burma comes in for

a historic visit. it's an event organized by silicon valley tech billionaires. this also features other global activists. she'll be addressing the local burmese community. the tour included meeting president obama. the post office will default on billions of dollars on a health care fund for future retirees. this is the second postal service default in two months, but the default is said to not impact daily post office operations and employees will still be paid. in just a few hours, a groundbreaking ceremony to extend bart to san jose. the focus will be on work to fremont. the project includes widening

sonoma county dog and her owners. her owner escaped through an open gate and then look what happened. she got stuck in an 18-inch culvert that runs under the road near their home. it was a difficult task for firefighters to help rescue the pup. they had to move dirt and bolders before cutting the pipe and freeing that little dog. 5:12, new this morning soldiers in kenya stage a predawn attack on a rebel group. the kenyan military has taken control of case mayo. the fighting go on. now losing that port city would be important because those militants have been taxing goods coming into the port. now the united states is monitoring the situation. there are reports connecting the attack in libya

to al-qaeda. there's a growing controversy about why american diplomats were not protected better. allison? >> reporter: u.s. officials say their investigation is evolving and they're learning more every day about who was behind that attack on the u.s. consulate in libya that killed four diplomats, including the u.s. am am. >> u.s -- intelligent officials believe the weapons were provided and most of the fighters. top officials say there was some intelligence ahead of the attack about terror groups in benghazi. >> there was nothing specific and certainly not a specific threat to the consulate that i'm aware of. >> now the obama administration is under fierce criticism from

republicans for not doing more to protect u.s. diplomats in libya and how it's managed this crisis. i will have more on that during my next update. allison burns, ktvu news. following up on a tip of the death of jimmy hoffa almost 40 years ago. today police will take soil samples. a man dying of cancer told police he saw someone being buried under a concrete slab back in the 1975. neighbors are doubtful saying more people would have seen that if it was true. >> everybody was watch out for everybody. you could ride down the block and somebody knew you. they would say, you better watch out. i'm going to tell your mom on you. we knew what was going on. >> if the soil sample tests positive for human remains, they will excavate the site. the judge overseeing the

colorado movie massacre case will release document this is morning. most of them will be released to the public in the next two hours. they may tell us more about the suspect, james holmes, and that shooting where 12 people were killed, 58 others were injured in july. holmes is facing 152 charges. new information this morning about a deadly plane crash in redwood city who years ago. federal investigators have now determined the small plane that plunged into a lagoon lost power in one of its engines before its crash. the plane took off from the airport in september 2010. it went up about 650 feet and plummeted to the ground. the three people on board were killed. city college of san francisco will close its castro campus. according to the examiner board of trustees voted unanimously on the cuts last night. classes offered at the two sites will not be canceled.

it's on the cool to mild side. if you're around the bay, it's nice, but if you're inland, it's warm to hot. temperatures anywhere from 60 to 90 degrees. it looks likethe inland temps start to warm up. the markets opened the day with gains today. after spain announced a budget that cuts government spending, many are losing ground right now. overnight markets in the east finished with gains on the final day of the trading week. china was up. japan down less than 1%. checking in on our numbers, despite the fact that the news

are competing in facebook's hack-a-thon. they're creating websites to help high school students get into and succeed in college. organizers are interested in helping low income students with their college plans. 30 grants will be handed out to the best proposals. a new report raises questions about credentials for california teachers. it found out that 20% of teachers were not properly credentialed for the classes they had last year. some call the problem frustrating since many teachers who were fully credentialed were laid off in recent years. new information shows more americans are living downtown. the census bureau says 6% of the entire american population live near town halls. new orleans saw the largest decline. americans are moving into downtown areas to be closer to

victim and why people say this street is a problem. >> it's certainly a concern for people living here. we're on the stretch of road you're talking about. we may be able to see some of the police evidence markers leftover from the accident. the girl's bicycle wound up near a pole nearby. a 12-year-old girl, haley ratliff was riding her bike at 3:15 when she was hit by a white suv. emergency crews showed up. the girl was taken by ambulance to the hospital and airlifted to children's hospital in oakland where she was pronounced dead. the authorities say the driver stopped at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. people living near the accident scene say this stretch of road can be dangerous. >> after this, i'm just scared to death about letting them ride. the cars come really, really fast. 50 miles an hour and the bike path is right there.

there's no separation. >> when we arrived here about 4:00 this morning, we found that candles and teddy bears had been set up as a memorial to the girl. there's also an online tribute, a facebook memorial page. we'll continue to follow this story and talk with drivers and commuters and pedestrians as they come through this area to find out ha they feel about walking down this stretch of road later this morning. we're live, ktvu channel 2 news. overnight news, one man is in the hospital after a traumatic and fatal accident. just after midnight the california highway patrol says a 35-year-old man's car lit the wall and came to a stop in the middle lanes. the collision knocked out his lights, making his car hard to see. that's when he got out of his car and was hit by another driver. the impact sent him through the windshield of that other car. he died at the scene. the condition of the person that hit him has not opinion

released released. masked gunmen robbed a grocery store, the second one this week. it happened in oakland. two gunmen robbed the grocery outlet store at 29th and broadway about 9:00 just before closing. now, witnesses say the men pistol whipped a store clerk, stole cash and escaped. all of this comes two days after a san leandro safeway store was robbed. demonstrators vow they will reoccupy an occupy camp that police raided. let me give you a look at the situation right now. you have the san francisco police line barricades going up to keep people from going into the federal reserve building.

the police officers have their protective gear on, just making sure that things things are quiet out here. you can see on the street the top of the san francisco police cars, those have been also parked here all night long as they keep an eye on the things on the street. there are barricades where protesters have set up camp in the past. things did get heated last night and a little messy out here as garbage cans knocked over. it looks like five people showed up. we're standing out and around. then we're joined by a group of 30 and that's when things got a little hotter. they actually started throwing bottles at the police officers. police called in reinforcements. we don't know if there are any arrests, but they were dispersed when the extra officers arrived on scene. this follows what happened the night before and show you the

video of what happened that night before things cleared up. that got even more heated, about 45 people arrested after they cleared out that space. that's really what led to this back and forth between protesters and police. the protesters said we're going to come back. we're going to occupy that space again and police have taken a stand saying that's not going to happen on their watch. a handful of officers are out here. it is quiet. as we saw overnight, if things change, they will call in extra people. we're going to continue to keep an eye on it for you. we'll keep you updated on the morning news. live here in san francisco, claudine wong, ktvu news. a man you just lost his job went on a killing rampage. he returned to the sign making business he worked and opened fire yesterday. he shot eight people. four of them died.

three are in critical season. afterwards, he turned the weapon on himself. police in body armor searched his home for evidence. last year, 458 people died in work related homicide. the southern california man believed to be behind the antimuslim film that sparked riots around the world is in protective custody. 55-year-old nakoula basseley nakoula from earlier this month, he was taken into custody yesterday afternoon on suspicion of violating the terms of his probation, which includes lying to investigators and using aliases. he may face new charges that could carry a two-year sentence. he'll remain behind bars until his next hearing because he's considered a flight risk. time is 5:36. the crisis in syria will be the center of a meeting in new york. hillary clinton hosted the talks. they will be urging groups that

oppose syrian president assad to unite. the talks will not include russia, china, or iran. crisis in syria has led to more than 30,000 deaths. well, the white house says israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu will be getting a cal from president obama today. this is a followup to the speeches at the united nations. yesterday netanyahu drew a red line there on a diagram of a bomb saying iran was close to finishing the second stage of nuclear enrichment. the israeli leader and president obama disagree on how to handle iran. some say president obama snubbed netanyahu by not meeting him in person. >> that's comedian roseanne barr in oakland. she had two big goals. one, she wants to become president and, two, she wants

he was ordered to undergo a year of domestic violence counseling. next month the board of supervisors is going to vote on whether or not he should keep his job. >> election news, president obama and republican challenger mitt romney will be raising campaign cash today on the east coast. now, mitt romney will make stops in philadelphia and boston. fundraisers are expected to generate about $8 million. president obama, he'll be keeping his campaign close to washington. he has three fundraising events scheduled. now over the weekend both candidates will be getting ready for next wednesday's presidential debate in denver. also in the race for president, roseanne barr who raged against politics as usual in oakland. >> government is not supposed to be run like a business. >> barr is the peace and freedom party's presidential nominee. he attended a forum on medical marijuana last night.

streets. >> authorities say they confiscated drugs and about $150,000 in cash. they say the drugs are often smuggled using secret compartments inside of vehicles. those suspects could face as many as 60 years in prison. now scientists have proof there was water on mars at one time. the rover curiosity sent pictures. these pictures show what appears to be a gravel stream bed. water moved in that channel and could have been going as fast as 3 feet per second. >> wow, 5:47. bart has welcome the first transit agency in america to install an early warning system that can reportedly detect major earthquakes seconds before they happen. now, the system was developed with the help of scientists. it uses sensors. once a quake is detected, an alert is sent out to a compute to reactually slow down bart trains. it's all designed to reduce the

of the high temperatures. reduced visibility, some of the fog heads back to the coast and stays there. we're waiting for it tomorrow and sunday to get the northeast wind. there's plenty to go around today. even with the fog burning off, inland temps looks like 80s and 90s. we start off 40s to 50s to 60s. a sea breeze, not that strong but a little stronger than yesterday. that system up there will prevent us from warming up today. high pressure is supposed to follow in behind that. we'll start tomorrow, areas of fog solid on the coast. warm to hot inland, not as warm to hot as yesterday. it still remains to be scene. the northwest wind, does not look like it's going to develop. there's a puff or a hint of an offshore breeze. inland temps look hot. coastal, 70s and maybe 80s if everything came in. it doesn't look like that's going to happen. thick fog, warm to hot inland. temperatures from 60 to 90
